Well, I'm not too sure about the Ottomans [weren't they some sort of
foot-stool furniture?] but I think S Artesian is definitely onto something
with Spain and the Moors. Moorish civilization was like the Roman Empire on
steroids. The Romans had Roman numerals, and no concept of zero. The Moors
didn't just have algebra. They CREATED it, along with elements leading to
the differential calculus which Newton refined.

You do the math.
