Actually the vaccines are already useless against the new
swine flu, since that wasn't taken into account when
the vaccines were formulated nearly a year ago.
The scientists who develop these vaccines make
educated guesses concerning which strains will
be prevalent in the upcoming flu season.  In recent
years, they have usually (but not always) made
fairly accurate guesses, but the flu vaccines were
designed for dealing with the usual strains of
flu that we normally see during the winter
and spring.  They were not designed
to deal with something like the current
outbreak of swine flu, which hadn't been
anticipated.  It would probably
take some months to develop and manufacture
an effective vaccine against this swine flu.

There is concern about the likely effectiveness
of the tamaflu for treating the swine flu.
In the past few years, its effectivness for
treating the more usual kinds of flu has
been diminishing because of the evolution
of drug-resistant strains.
