Re: [Marxism] International Socialist Review on Pharmaceutical
Might I step out of character here and play the part of a moderating
influence?
Before we get too carried away, and too wrapped up with what passes for
science today, let me relate an experience that indicates to me that when we
are measuring something by science, we are not just measuring that
something, we are measuring the cultural, historical, and class development
of science:
Years of work on the railroad have bequeathed me with some damaged hearing,
tinnitus, and inner ear/balance disorders. I was treated a few years ago by
Dr. Matthew HM Lee, MD, now retired, head of the Rusk Institute of
Rehabilitation Medicine at New York University. He utilized acupuncture.
No big deal. What was a big deal was his introduction, support, and
extension of MUSIC therapy for those suffering brain damage due to stroke,
traumatic defects, congenital disorders.
In our discussions he spoke of the resistance he encountered, initially, in
his support for this therapy-- resistance based on a "lack of scientific
support" for its efficacy. Of course, the resistance eventually flipped to
general acclaim for his "vision" and "daring," when to him, he was just
following up on what he knew to be good science.
We agreed that as science improved it became more "musical" in its
recognition, its embrace, of the heretofore "unheard of" the supposedly
"discordant."
Word.
