And "fly" denotes, as noun, a ball hit on an arc inside the ball park,  
and as a verb, in the present tense, the act of hitting a "fly" (as  
adjective) ball.  But its past tense is (by television/radio  
announcers) formed irregularly--"he flew out to centerfield."  Give up  
trying to make sense of it.
