I think the differences are more important than the similarities. In
Bolivia, the Crucenos (is that what they're called?) are the previously
all powerful mainly white holders of political and economic power.
Morales represents a very real threat to their long term domination of
Bolivia, whatever faith we may have in his socialist rhetoric. The nutty
fringe of the US Republican Party don't represent anything like that.
And Obama doesn't represent any threat to existing wealth and power
relations. So while there may be some similarities in appearance between
the two, I think that's about as far as it goes.
