I once worked in a job which involved co-ordinating inputs from a range of
economists to arrive at consensus forecasts. At one point it was suggested
(by a non-economist) that we create a simple spreadsheet, log all the
forecasts, and track them against the eventual real outcomes. Boy, they were
SO not interested in doing that.
On the other hand, the forecasting process wasn't a total waste of time. It
did say quite a bit about trends. But about current trends, not future ones.
