Before becoming pope, Ratzinger had made clear many
times that he preferred to see a "purer", that is a more
doctrinally orthodox church, even if that meant seeing a smaller
church.

His recent embarassment over the lifting of the excommunication
of the traditionalist bishop Richard Williamson, of the Society
of St. Pius X, who turned out to be a Holocaust denier,
is one illustration that this pope is intent upon bringing
back into the fold many of the far right Catholics who
had broken with Rome over Vatican II. That someone
like Bishop Williamson should turn out to be a Holocaust
denier should come as no surprise, since of the main
issues which had led these traditionalists to break
with Rome in the first place was the Church's
change of its stance in regards to the Jews
and Judaism starting with Nostra Aetate.
