Concerning Ratzinger. Back in the 1960s as a young theologian,
he was known as a liberal. He served as an advisor to the
Vatican II Council. Indeed, he was an associated with, and to
was to some extent a protege of the liberal theologian Hans Kung.
Obviously,
the two men went into quite different directions over the years since
then. In the case of Ratzinger, the pivotal moment seems to have
been the outbreaks of student unrest in Germany in 1968, while
he was professor of theology at Tubingen. The unrest was felt
even within the theological school at his university, which deeply
frightened and shocked him. After that he would become more
and more conservative.
