This talk is about
the Flint, Michigan,Âsit down strikes. These
were the spectacular strikes of the 20th Century. Instead of
the workers walking out, the bosses had to leave the factory. The workers
converted the factories into fortresses which they lived in and held for a
month until General Motors recognized the union. Jimâs mother was among
the group of women who took long poles to break out the windows to let the tear
gas out.

This talk is
aboutÂfighting McCarthyism in Michigan
.ÂJim was the first and only witness in 1948 to appear before the Michigan
Senate Committee on Un-AmericanÂActivities chaired by State SenatorÂMatthew
Callahan. The following autumn, Callahan was defeated in the Republican
primary.

2009ÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂ 7:00 PM

The final talk is
about the early years of SDS (Students for a Democratic Society). Jim
moved to New York City
and was part of a group called the FDR Four Freedoms Club which started in his
apartment. It affiliated to SDS before Tom Hayden joined.ÂÂ
