Ruthless should look at a map and read what he comments on a little more
closely.

For oil extracted around the Caspian Sea, the U.S. would need the route from
the Sea thru Kazakhstan (or
Turkmenistan) into Afghanistan and then on thru Pakistan to the sea and the
clutches of US
oil companies. The major industrial areas of Russia (or previously the SU)
lies directly north
of the Caspian Sea.

Sending the oil thru Afghanistan would be sending it out of the way.
