I have an older sister who was educated in a elite East-coast women's college,
is fluent in four languages, has lived abroad in Europe and traveled widely, is
a published novelist and is a life-long liberal democrat who volunteered for
the Obama campaign. She also became a born-again Christian in her 20s.

A few years ago my mother had a stroke and I started taking care of her. My
sister was staying for a while when my mother started experiencing nighttime
anxiety attacks. I wanted to give her some meds, but my sister started praying
over her and exorcising an evil spirit, which calmed her down (my mother is
also born again). She "explained" to me that some ailments are physical but
some are demonic in origin.

My point is that my sister is a very well-educated, stable, accomplished woman
and mother, about as level-headed a person that I've met, and she believes this
stuff, as do many millions of others. If we on the left treat everyone who
believes in angels and demons as nut cases, then we will spend most of the time
talking to ourselves -- which in fact seems to be an occupational hazard for
lefties.
