[Marxism] Issues (attacks) facing Iran's Nuclear Industry
Issues (attacks) facing Iran's Nuclear Industry
While the Russian built light water reactor at Bushehr will be loaded
with fuel in a few months and go on line in early 2010, a more
"controversial" plant is being built called the IR-40. It is being built
in Arak, home to other nuclear facilities in Iran. This IR-40 is Iran's
smaller, heavy water reactor. Iranian government authorities in the
country will not allow the IAEA access to the facility.
This is where it gets very dicey. According to the NPT, Iran doesn't
have to show the IAEA anything until it is loaded with fuel. Why does
imperialism, then, worry about this reactor more than, say, the IAEA
endorsed Bushehr light water reactor? Heavy Water Reactors (HWR) are
'research' reactors and they are excellent at producing Pu-239 for
making hydrogen bombs. Many countries have such HWRs and they are very
standard university type research reactors. It is essentially this type
of reactor that Pakistan used to develop it's nuclear weapons. It is
"40MWs" in size, meaning it's not designed to provide much power to
Iran's energy starved electricity grid.
Since Iran now has a roof over this reactor (it should be noted that it
is NOT being built underground or hidden from view, generally)
imperialist satellites have no visual clues about the exact specifics of
this reactor. Iran also announced that they were building it in the
press, and that it would follow NPT guidelines. Yet...the imperialists
are charging "WMD" without any evidence. It, along with fuel processing
facilities in the Arak area and one of two main "targets" for both
Israel and the US should hostilities over Iran's energy sovereignty
ensue. The other is the centrifuge center in Natanz for producing light
enriched fuel for the Bushehr and the other 18 larger nuclear plants
Iran wants to build over the next 20 years.
The 'threat' here lies in what the Israeli's and/or the U.S. might do
between now and when the Bushehr facility actually get loaded with fuel.
I believe the imperialists want to set back and destroy the totality of
Iran's nuclear facilities. All of them. This means hitting the Bushehr
facility even though it has almost zero military potential as a producer
of weapons grade plutonium. It would be hit as part of a concerted
effort by either or both of the above imperialist entities. Israeli TV
has shown maps of the fallout if Bushehr is hit while it is either
loaded with fuel or on line. They draw a circle across the center of the
country and argue "not many would be effected". Scary stuff.
I see, however, any attack coming on Iran, should Imperialism allow the
Israelis to do this as coming sooner, in the next few months, rather
than later. I hope I am very wrong.
