I don't know of a single Marxist who remains silent on the oppression of
women in Saudi Arabia (the situation is very different with respect to
confused liberal relativists) - it seems a little as if you're conflating
reactionary bourgeois opinion with that of progressive Marxists. I would
have thought that a Marxist ought *not* to make distinctions between the
reactionary ideas and policies of third world ruling classes simply on the
basis of how antithetical they are towards the imperialist nations.
Plus, whilst I don't know a great deal of detail about post-1979 Iran, in
the early days of the Ayatollah, I believe the situation for women was a
good deal worse than it is today. And in Afghanistan under the Taliban it
certainly was pretty much on a par with Saudi Arabia in most respects.
Solidarity,
Ian
