Re: [Marxism] Spanish
Tom O'Lincoln:
Â
I certainly didn't mean to launch a star chamber proceeding either. Rohan,
I just thought your post was unnecessarily sharp.
Â
Â
No its all good comrade! And yes, my post was unnecessarily sharp. My
natural curriosity got the better of me.
Â
Curriosity can be a powerful force. If a friendÂvisits me and says, "I've
got to tell you something... No sorry... I promised x I wouldn't tell anyone,"
this will drive me nuts! Similar forces are a work when a conversationÂtakes
place that only some can be privy to.
Â
To give comrades an idea of how hopelessly monolingual the dominant culture in
my part of the world is I have to tell you about a conversation in one of my
TAFE (tech college) classes. The subject of people speaking in a different
language in one's presence came up (as in a public setting - egÂa bus stop)
and all the other studentsÂagreed thatÂto do this was veryÂrude. I
couldn't believe it and objected, "What's wrong with people talking in their
own language? Why would it matter?ÂÂWhy doÂyou assume the can speak
English anyway?"Â The answer I got was, "How can we know that they areÂnot
talking about us and saying bad things?"Â Wow, the paranoia.
