About forty years ago Lenny Brenner summed up the quandry very well while I  
was bewailing the difficulty of learning Spanish on your own in your spare 
time  - assuming you had any. His answer was a thorough encapsulation of 
historical  materialism applied to the era of imperial hegemony: "It is very 
hard for 
a  citizen of an imperial power to learn the language of the colony."
 
It the US education system would start training youth in Spanish in  
kindergarten - and there is no reason it shouldn't - we could become a  
linguistically 
cosmopolitan country. But that wasn't in the cards when I was  young and the 
globe was America's oyster. 
 
It linguistic theory is accurate that the window in the brain that is  
receptive to learning language shuts down no later than seventeen years of age, 
 the 
members of this list are going to have a hard time catching  up.
