> Guadeloupe: general strike spreads Submitted by WW4 Report on Tue,
02/10/2009 - 17:02. After 22 hours of negotiations, on the morning of Feb.
8 management and strikers in the French overseas department of Guadeloupe
reached a preliminary agreement that could form the basis for ending a
general strike that has paralyzed the island since Jan. 20.
Thanks for posting this about this general strike in this Antillean island,
even if only after 20 days of the struggle. Those February 8 news are long
outdated, and the strike goes on. One of the strike leaders even told
France24 that he thinks that Martinique, the other French colony in the
Caribbean has also entered the struggle, and that he expects Guyana and
Réunion (this one in the Indian Ocean) to join soon. A PS (Parti Socialiste)
spokesperson interviewed today on France24 reminded the listeners that in
1967 there was a strike in Guadeloupe and a year later the May 1968 uprising
occured in metropolitan France.
I already thought that this mailing list had degenerated into chat where
various intellectuals of US-only prominence would be the main subject for a
chat, but class struggle in America, but beyond the USA borders would be out
of vision since the owner of this list had declared it list-illegal to share
the
look on the world from the major of the Antilles islands.
There are more major events in the world wide class struggle which
seemingly do not interest the "Activists and scholars in Marxist tradition" of
the USofA: A mass struggle for power in Madagascar, where the mayor of the
capital declared himself to be the provisional government, and where the
presidential guard killed about 20 demonstrators marching -- unarmed -- on
the presidential palace; Morgan Tsvangirai sworn in as prime minister of
Zimbabwe by Mugabe, in the presence of Thabo Mbeki, who has also been
declared un unperson for this list.
