Re: [Marxism] Ian Angus on Charles Darwin

Some of the recent biographies that I have
seen of Darwin have argued that one of the
reasons why Darwin delayed publishing his
theory of evolution by natural selection,
is that in the 1830s, the people who
were most vocal about evolution tended
to be Owenites, Fourierists, and militant
atheists. Darwin, came from a respectable
Whig family, was loathe to be seen as being
associated with such socialists and
atheists.

*By Ian Angus. *February 12, 2009 is Darwin Day, the 200th anniversary
of the birth of Charles Darwin. His masterwork, /On the Origin of
Species/, was published 150 years ago, in November 1859, initiating a
revolution in science that continues to this day.
