This is not at all far-fetched.  The same sort of link has been
suggested, in the inverse, by scientists studying global warming.  The
polar caps have been a weighty consideration in achieving what
tentative balances exist between tectonic plates.  As the ice melts
and the weight decreases, stresses earlier constrained by the weight
are much more likely to cause a slip between the plates or even along
any of the minor internal fissures within the plates.
