Re: [Marxism] J. Robert Oppenheimer documentary to air on PBS tonight

Oppenheimer certainly had close relations with
the CPUSA during the 1930s. We know that his
brother, wife, and mistress, had all been
Party members. All this was well known
to US government officials from the time
that he had first been vetted before his
appointment as scientific director of the
Manhattan Project.

By the time of his public shaming,
Oppenheimer, despite what his earlier
political views may have been, was
as much a cold warrior as anyone else.
What got him into trouble was his outspoken
opposition to the development of the
H-bomb. That was his big crime and,
given his status and prestige, it was
thought opportune by the powers that be
to make an example out of him so that
no other scientists would get ideas about
publicly opposing government policies
during the cold war.
