Re: [Marxism] William Greider: Obama's Economic Plan Is Not Going to Save Us

"President Obama and his team may at first scorn the notion of saving the
world while negotiating a bailout for the United States. They will be
reluctant to talk about reforming the global system by threatening to
invoke emergency tariffs. But we are in uncharted waters. Impossible
ideas abruptly begin to seem plausible. Six months from now, if the
Obama recovery does not materialize, the president may discover he has
to reinvent himself."

This is what I had in mind when I wrote a while ago that Obama was likely to
act like a new FDR, despite his own current plans and conceptions. However,
I think that Louis Proyect's harping on the absence of a strong left today -
compared to when FDR took power, do have to be taken into account. More than
this, the absence of the Soviet Union and a strong international left also
has to be taken into account. I think Obama is a cautious, pragmatic,
bourgeois politician, but he will not be able to govern cautiously in the
economic gale that has begun.
