Re: [Marxism] VIDEO: Seeger and Springsteen sing original Woody Guthrie at Obama concert

S. Artesian: "the land as the land, as an entity of nature with all those cool
things, like redwood forests, and rivers, and diamond deserts, and purple
mountains majesty wasn't made for you, me, or anyone. It was, is, and will
be, but it is not those things for you, me, us, or anyone."

Get literal much? When two people say they were "made for each other," they
don't think that a factory was involved, and when Guthrie writes about this
land being "made" for you and me, he doesn't think that when geological
evolution (or perhaps he meant God, although there's no evidence of that in the
song, so I'll presume he didn't) created the planet and eventually the Grand
Canyon and Yosemite and the redwood forests, it had the American people in mind
(or the native Americans or anyone else). What he IS saying is that this land
was intended for all of us. He doesn't think it IS owned by everyone; that's
what the line about "private property" is about. He thinks it SHOULD be the
common property of everyone, and he's celebrating what a beautiful place it is.
Not a beautiful country. Not a beautiful state. A beautiful place that we all
should enjoy, and, I hasten to point out, will be able to do so so much better
in a socialist America.

"the song is so wedded to that "naturalism," it can be used by anybody-- OK
almost anybody-- for anything-- hell, it could be used to sell SUVs,"

Really? Let us know how Ford and GM feel about that "private property" thing.
