Re: [Marxism] Percentage of young people who say they are Catholic drops drastically in Spain
I'd have to agree with David on his point re: Italy and the rise in
racist and anti-immigrant sentiment there. It seems to be really out
of control. for an interesting read on the subject, check out
"Involuntary Witness", by Gianrico Carofiglio.
Synopsis from the net:
"A nine-year-old boy is found murdered at the bottom of a well near a
popular beach resort in southern Italy. In what looks like a hopeless
case for Guido Guerrieri, counsel for the defence, a Senegalese
peddler is accused of the crime. Faced with small-town racism fuelled
by the recent immigration from Africa, Guido attempts to exploit the
esoteric workings of the Italian courts. More than a perfectly paced
legal thriller, this relentless suspense novel transcends the genre.
A powerful attack on racism, and a fascinating insight into the
Italian judicial process, it is also an affectionate portrait of a
deeply humane hero."
In real life the author is an anti-mafia judge in Bari. His main
character, Guido G., is a self-described "man of the left". I
immensely enjoyed all three of his novels. Because of the author's
real-life understanding of the Italian judicial system, the quickly
paced and sophisticated court-room drama is unlike anything I've come
across in fiction. It's like a much more intelligent and left-wing
version of Perry Mason.

p.s. his work is put out by Bitter Lemon press, which also publishes
Leonardo Padura Fuentes' work.
