Re: [Marxism] SF protests cop killing of unarmed man

Lou put SF meaning San Francisco in the Subject line. The riot was in
Oakland. But it's still partly correct, because the rioters were a
combination of anarchists from Berkeley and SF and street thugs well
known in Oakland.

The NY Times report fails to convey how overwhelming the anger about the
riot is among Oakland residents of all colors and income levels. The
businesses that were trashed were tiny family operations for whom a $600
window replacement takes away half their net income for the month. Most
are minority owned: Black braid shop, Mongolian cafe, Korean pharmacy,
etc. The Times also minimizes the vandalism. Every vehicle on one block
after another had several hundred dollars of smash-in and jump-on damage
done (and in these downtown blocks the vehicles belong to working
people, not the rich).

One of the two organizers of the supposedly peaceful protest (no
monitors or other people's security) is a $75,000 a year poverty pimp,
head of an agency funded mostly by local government grants.

Here's a typical comment posted to a local blog: Why are the people
distressed by Oscar Grant's death not similarly outraged when a black
youth on the streetcorner is executed by a rival drug dealer? Where were
the marches and the speeches when Chauncey Bailey was slain? [Bailey was
a Black journalist murdered in 2007 as he was completing an expose of a
criminal gang operating under a Muslim front, a gang that had received
compliments from Oakland mayor Ron Dellums and Congressperson Barbara
Lee.] If investigations are not completed quickly enough for our liking,
why at the ballot box do we starve our police department of funding for
investigators?
