Re: [Marxism] John Reed Film Society nominees
I saw Part 1 and found it historically accurate, and I'm looking forward to
part 2. I don't see how you can decry it as stupid? It is incomplete, very
incomplete, but the parts included show Che's view of American imperialism,
his courage on the battlefield, his personal struggles, etc, in a way that
is very progressive for Hollywood. Sort of a 30 hour film adaption based on
John Lee Anderson's 800 page biography of him, there could be no perfect Che
movie, but I thought that the half of "Che" I watched and the "Motorcycle
Diaries" were very well done.
I would hardly call the movie reactionary. Same with Slumdog Millionaire,
it depicted graphic poverty and inequality in India. Of course it was a
fairy-tale story, but who was expecting another "Salaam Bombay". It also
depicted some of the violence against Muslims in India, in the wake of the
Mumbai attacks I think this was important.
On the flip side of the coin....
I wouldn't call Valkyrie very anti-fascist either. The people involved
weren't progressives, unlike a lot of the German resistance (and French
resistance) who hailed from the left. A lot of them were defenders
of privilege, accessories to genocide and were extreme nationalists.
And I enjoyed the Battle in Seattle due to its content and message, but it
featured some of the worst screenwriting I've seen in a while.
