Yes of course, the very idea of Israel, like all confessional states, was an
awful one. But it is crucial to remember that there was the Kibbutz phase
when Israel was able to pose however falsely as a "light unto the
nations". Recall that Russia voted in favour of the setting up of Israel
while Britain abstained. So there were some illusions in Israel.
I have read that the Suez war of 1956 was the beginning of the end of the
flirtation of some leftists with Israel. Yet when I was at uni in the 60-63
period, it was still fashionable for the progressive student to spend time
on a kibbutz.
All that has now changed. Israel stands exposed as one of the most
horrifyingly bloodthirsty nations since the height of Nazi Germany.
