Do you have a sense of why ISU staff is so timid? Is it a highly dictatorial
school? And why are there no student groups who would act?


Hunter's response:

ISU is like many state colleges and universities in the vast "hinterland" [as
well as some elsewhere in the United States] in the years since Reagan's
ascendancy: highly political administrations which are extremely sensitive to
statehouse pressures -- including funding; job-scared faculty and staff: mostly
cautious students including many older than average students who don't wish an
iota of involvement; a relatively conservative community setting.

In the case of places like ISU, all of this is presently exaggerated. ISU had
for years -- he was here when we arrived and remained so until a couple of
years ago -- an openly authoritarian president. His replacement is changing
little of that.

Things will change.
