Obama, the providential leader, is nothing like Blum: but he has
something in common with an ethnically much further (Corsican)
outsider (and his nephew) who at moments of great crisis gained power
in France with overwhelming popular support. The first used that
power (which put them "above" politics and "above" classes) to secure
and the second to reinstate the power of the big bourgeoisie. The
first left France with a tradition of professional public
administration and the second with a tradition of state capitalism--
two traditions painfully absent in Obama's USA.
