On issues of race, FDR was exactly the same as the bastards who went
before him, with the single exception of floating a half-hearted piece
of legislation that would have made lynching a Federal offense. But
that was mostly Eleanor's issue and FDR never got behind it. If I
remember rightly Democrats filibustered it into oblivion.

The simple lunkheaded act of desegregating the military had to await
that postwar executive order by Harry Truman, the only U.S. president
to have admitted membership in the Ku Klux Klan. So, it can
truthfully be said that the Klansman who succeeded FDR had a better
civil rights record than he did.
