FDR supposedly had to acquiesce to the demands of the racist southern wing
of the party. On the other hand, I know of no effort he made to challenge
them.
Forty some years ago, I read
Conrad, David Eugene. 1965. The Forgotten Farmers: The Story of
Sharecroppers in the New Deal (Urbana: University of Illinois Press).
I have not seen it discussed, but it did a bang up job describing how even
new deal liberals were willing to screw over the black farmers in favor of
the plantation owners.
