He did oppose it, not quite in the same way that he "opposed" the invasion and 
occupation of Iraq, but close. He *publicly* (in a joint interview with the 
same Rick Warren) announced his opposition to same-sex marriage, but only 
*privately* (in a letter to a gay rights group and in an obscure section of his 
website) announced his opposition to Prop. 8. And, when prop 8 supporters 
circulated a letter containing quotes from him opposing gay marriage (and hence 
implying that he was a supporter of prop 8), Obama did nothing to counter its 
effect (e.g., by issuing a public statement denouncing the letter and affirming 
his opposition to 8).
