[Marxism] When did "War" Dept. become Defense? (Was:Re: Barry Sheppard: Change or continuity? Which way is Obamagoing?

that long? When exactly dit they change? I thought the imperialist
countries had changed their War ministries changed to "Defense" after the
so-called World War 1.

Sheppard is right, according to Wikipedia. This is also my recollection.

Wikipedia states: The United States Department of War, sometimes also called
the War Office, was the department of the United States government's
executive branch responsible for the operation and maintenance of land (and
later air) forces from 1789 until September 18, 1947, when it became part of
the National Military Establishment, renamed on August 10, 1949 the
Department of Defense.

The Navy (with the Marines) was integrated later, probably with the
formation of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the various military arms.
