Re: [Marxism] Obama Campaign Network vis-a-vis the Democratic Party

Sukla: "It would be nothing less than a tragedy if his campaign network is
now dissolved instead of functioning as a campaign team to realise the
election promises and more than that the vision generated."

Early on the Obama campaign seemed to have some characteristics of a
"movement," but well before the end of the primaries it became clear this
was a staff-driven, staff-directed operation, even if the number of
volunteers was quite large and these volunteers were allowed some latitude
in deciding where and how to carry out the normal campaign propaganda
activities.

We should not be fooled by the size of the rallies he held throughout the
fall. Yes, everyone there was for an end to the war and "change," a slogan
that reflected the progressive aspirations of working and oppressed peoples.
But in some ways, and perhaps the ones that matter most, those were rock
concerts rather than protest rallies: the magnet that drew people was the
star of the show, not the issues/causes associated with the event.

The house meetings may provide a useful way to get to know some people and
perhaps attract them to some local activity, but I think the idea that
Obama's campaign can be the nucleus or vehicle for a real movement of some
sort is likely to prove an illusion.
