I really balk at this discussion of "incipient fascism."  McCain and
Palin are, despicably, pandering to racists, including the most
objectionable thuggish racists. However, that's just part of the
standard Republican posturing.  They're not leading uniformed (or
uninformed) bands of thugs marching around attacking picket lines or
minority neighborhoods, etc.  They're not holding mass rallies openly
proclaiming the superiority of the white race.  If pressed, McCain and
Palin aren't going to shout racist views from the rooftops, but will
rather babble meaningless liberal platitudes.

That's not "incipient fascism" but, basically, the Same Old Shit as
the segregationist Democrats used to do when they were part of the
"liberal" FDR coalition.  The threat here is, just as it was in those
days, that a handful of them will decide that they can become American
Heroes by acting on the racist assumptions of the ritual litany and
use their Second Amendment rights to exorcise their demons.

That--and not "incipient fascism"--is the real worry...not that I know
what we can do about that...
