This was the passage that jumped out at me, as it represents the true
failure of McCain's campaign.  They *had* to demonize Obama with some
kind of creepy "otherness" in order to scare voters away from him.  I
feel that they've failed to do so, and even the bourgeois press seems to
be laughing at them for their failure.

As an aside, in contrast to your well thought out analysis, there's a
liberal blog that has a cute sort of "pantomime" of the debate, acted
out with little smiley characters:

Which analysis would be understood by more of the American electorate is
left as an exercise for the reader.  :)
