This sense of panic, of loss of control, of a desperate desire for
something to be different because everything is being pulled out 
from under our feet seems to be the predominant emotion for many
at this moment. Public responses have differed rather widely.

Here in Los Angeles a couple of days ago, as-yet uncaught individuals
responded by pouring gasoline on a homeless man and setting him afire. 
He'd lived in the neighborhood, not bothering anyone, for a decade:

Meanwhile, on the East Coast, GOP VP candidate Sarah Palin found a
surprisingly less-warm welcome than her schedulers had expected by
a crowd they'd figured to give the "hockey mom" a warm welcome.

Probably because they didn't appreciate the interruption of their
hockey game with an opportunistic politician taking advantage of
a moment when they were trying to forget their troubles by watching
a sports spectacle, this happened

And then, some of the people are getting over some of the deepest 
prejudices they hold, their racism, in hopes that an election victory by
Senator Obama might begin to turn things around:
