Hey,I was a newb at all this back then (still am, compared to most of you.).
What was obvious to you was utterly opaque to me then!

>DAVE But he did fail -- as Nader also failed -- to ensure that the US Green
Party was a membership controlled party.

I was Co-coordinator of The Green Party of Los Angeles County from about
2001-2003 and saw much of this in action and, as you know, have
blogged<http://polizeros.com>a lot about it. Jo Freeman's The Tyranny
of Structurelessness could have
been written about the GP. A consensus form of governing doesn't scale. It
works for small groups where people know each other, but not so well in
large organizations.

>DAVE Therein hangs a lesson perhaps?

Lots of them. As problems of structure impede the Green Party, they also
hurt vanguard parties, because their vanguard positioning often precludes
them from gaining a real mass presence. Conversely, it's that same zeal that
often means that they are the ones who do much of the heavy lifting of
organizing long after everyone else has gone home. So, it cuts both ways.
