[Marxism] books for kids
Most definitely Philip Pullman's "His Dark Materials" trilogy!
Re Tolkein: Worth reading just because it's so popular. And yes there's
elements of what Matt said. I'm actually re-reading it now in possible
preparation for a piece on him and C.S. Lewis.
I reread "Johnny Tremain" last year for the first time in 40 years, and was
impressed at its depiction of a young boy coming to terms with both personal
and political maturity, and he's not at all a one-sided character. If there
are equivalent books about youth coming to terms with similar dilemmas in
the antislavery struggle, or strikes, or women's struggles, etc., they would
be great.
I suppose 11 might be too young for "Les Miserables," but who knows. Give it
a shot!
And a few months ago the NYTimes Book Review had something on progressive
children's books.
