Re: [Marxism] 2 items on Obama from Counterpunch

Walter is confused as to what the Nader campaign is now doing for the
same reason he is confused on some other questions...he lacks the
curiosity to look.

We are pursuing a very aggressive petitioning campaign and have
volunteers on the road, hitting the states in waves, as their
deadlines are coming due. As stated earlier, at the antiwar
conference in Cleveland, the Nader regularly staffed a table with
ample literature and campaign material. We got a lot of petition
signatures as well in preparation for the Ohio petitioning campaign.

The McKinney campaign was less visible than the Socialist Party
campaign, which, at least, had a table with campaign literature and
buttons.

And who can be surprised? While exaggerated for effect, Alex Briscoe
hit the nail right on the head earlier: "McKinney would be a great
national candidate if more than 1/100 of 1% of the population knew who
she was." In Cincinnati, Nader is more well known in the black
community than McKinney.

Imho, McKinney should have run for her Congressional seat as an
independent. That and Cindy Sheehan's campaign might have provided
showcases for broad insurgent campaigns and I think McKinney might
well have had a chance at winning. I'd have personally done
everything I can to get volunteers to her district, raise money, etc.

As it stands, her presidential campaign is panning out to be little
different than any of half a dozen other morally unobjectionable but
political insignificant efforts. Mind, you, I understand Eli's point
that the strength of a third party candidate doesn't matter in his
calculation,. I've taken that position several times many times
myself.

In this election, though, I think a focused approach around the
strongest progressive insurgent offers a chance at doing more than
casting a gratifying protest vote.

And, if you're going to pretend to address what the Nader campaign is
actually doing, at least show the intellectual curiosity and political
integrity of finding out.
