Letters: Questions for Gore Vidal

At 82, Gore Vidal can still teach us all some­thing: the va­lid­i­ty
of the adage, "There's no fool like an old fool" ("Lit­erary Lion,"
June 15). Vidal says it is only a rumor that John Mc­Cain was a P.O.W.
and claims to have doubts be­cause Vidal "is West Point" and he knows
"a lot of the An­napo­lis breed." Gore cer­tain­ly did not at­tend
that acade­my, and yet he feels com­for­t­able de­fam­ing Mc­Cain by
im­ply­ing that he did not suf­fer in the P.O.W. camp. We have all
seen the pic­tures of Mc­Cain in the Hanoi Hilton, but Vidal wants us
to believe him, and not our lying eyes.

How de­press­ing that such a learned, re­spect­ed writ­er can pro­vide
such an ex­am­ple of how not to grow older. He belies his lib­er­al
roots by being closed of mind and, well, an old grump.
