The basic thrust of Artesian's arguments seems sound to me. He is not
predicting a war, but stating that a tendency in this direction is built
into the present situation, including the economic crisis.
I would damn sure rather have gotten myself into a sweat over a war danger
that, once again, fades to orange for the time being, than to have been
complacent, citing all kinds of wise reasons why they MIGHT NOT do it (and
there are many reasons).
Imperialism is the most violent system in world history. Imperialism seeks
not freedom, but domination. Let's recall (or learn if we haven't had a
chance to absorb it yet). Imperialism is reaction. Bush-Cheney are more open
representatives of these fundamentals of imperialism than others.
But how does one explain that this resolution, which flatly calls for a
naval blockade of Iran (demanding that the US military inspect all ships
entering or leaving Iran and bar those carrying strategic materials). If it
claims that nothing in the resolution authorizes war, this is a lie to calm
the suckers. A naval blockade is war. If there is a naval blockade of Iran,
Israel will bomb Iran. If Iran retaliates, Washington will join the attack.
The resolution is a proposal for a joint Israeli-US attack on Iran.
Would Bush and Cheney have the heart to say no if Congress essentially
DEMANDS THAT HE IMPOSE A NAVAL BLOCKADE.
It is supported by AIPAC. Does AIPAC control the US government? Absolutely
not. AIPAC is the voice and money of the Israeli government, and also of
those in the US ruling class who think Israel is a vital defense and
expansion perimeter of the US empire. They are not a small or weak group.
This resolution is headed toward easy and automatic approval by both houses
of Congress. The resolution is initiated by Democrats, and many endorsee
it.It seems likely to be approved not only without determined opposition,
but without any real debate in Congress or in the public.
Is it unstoppable? No. Absolutely not. If it suddenly gets referred to
committee, or something like that, that will mean that somebody, somewhere
with the power to do so floored the brakes!
BUT THERE IS NO SIGN WHATEVER OF THAT HAPPENING.
What does that mean? Those who could floor the brakes -- the sectors of the
ruling class that could do so -- are apparently unwilling to do so, perhaps
because they disagree, perhaps because they fear the consequences but have
no alternative. If this resolution passes Congress as, we must assume that
there will be a massive attack on Iran, starting with a US naval blockade.
Remember the Kyle-Lieberman resolution that Hillary Clinton support.
Although it has to be considered a war resolution in essence, conscious
opposition gutted it of any direct endorsement of military action. But this
resolution calls for the US to interdict all shipping headed for Iran, and
inspect it for strategic materials. They do not call for the UN to do this,
because that would introduce nasty diplomatic obstacles. Some would oppose,
and some might even veto -- unlike in Congress right now where everything is
copacetic.
Notice that the propaganda has shifted from opposing a nuclear-armed Iran to
opposing a "nuclear Iran". This is Israel's position now. It is increasingly
the way the debate is framed. Iran must not have any independent access to
nuclear power. Given how far Iran has advanced, this means in reality Iran
delenda est. (Iran must be destroyed, for those few whose Latin is even
worse than mine.
Will they attack Iran? I don't know. Would the results be catastrophic, not
just for us and working people, but for the US rulers. I think so, but that
is speculative. More important is the fact that as things are, THE ATTACK IS
COMING. Face up to reality.
