Fans of old Etonian derring-do might be interested to note that Simon Mann 
seems on the verge of spilling the beans in respect of full UK gov knowledge of
the coup attempt:
"Spain and South Africa both "gave the green light" for a failed coup in 
oil-rich 
Equatorial Guinea, a British mercenary has told a court in Malabo."

Margaret Thatcher's son partly bankrolled the operation, and allegedly Mann
was warned to "hang up his boots" prior to the attempted coup by a Foreign
Office figure.
The WSWS noted Mann's public "warning", via a Channel 4 documentary, 
earlier this year:
"When Sandline and Executive Outcomes were hired by the government of 
Papua New Guinea, the mercenaries who had waged a brutal war against 
the local population found themselves in prison. The British government 
stepped in to rescue the Sandline employees. Mann has received no such
 help this time. He remains in prison in Equatorial Guinea, bargaining
 with the threat of fresh revelations."
