Ah, but since nobody, nobody, defended or advocated imperial rule over
other peoples in those days there were obviously no "imperialists."
But now we know that the "ism," the ideology, of defending imperial
rule over oppressed peoples is not at all what we should mean by
"imperialism." Instead the 21st-century meaning of the word
"imperialism" is to be found by taking literally the "Aesopian
language" of a 1916 pamphlet as timeless truth.
