If Cheney & Co. Had Really Plotted the 9/11 Attacks ...

The following is an adapted excerpt from Matt Taibbi's new book, The 
Great Derangement" (Spiegel and Grau, 2008).

The 9/11 Truth movement is really distinguished by a kind of defiant 
unfamiliarity with the actual character of America's ruling class. In 
9/11 lore the people who staff the White House, the security agencies,

the Pentagon and groups like PNAC and the Council of Foreign Relations

are imagined to be a monolithic, united class of dastardly, 
swashbuckling risk-takers with permanent hard-ons for Bourne 
Supremacy-style "false flag" and "black bag" operations, instead of the

mundanely greedy, risk-averse, backstabbing, lawn-tending, half-clever

suburban golfers they are in real life.

CB: It is these authors who exhibit a ridiculous conception of the
ruling class and its _agents_. I just saw a C-span retrospective seminar
on Watergate, with John Dean, Egil "Bud" Grough,  and others who were
directly involved. It doesn't take but a relatively small group of
"operatives", agents, literally, to carry out what is  referred to these
days as a "conspiracy theory" ( unexplicably mimicking a ruling class
media phraesology that mocks any suspicions about state sponsored
plots).  In fact , I am sure that it is a ruling class media and
propaganda campaign of the last twenty or thirty years that has even
people on the left using the concept of "conspiracy theory" to
automatically discredit any comment or thought that some event has been
instigated or "carried out" by _agents_ of the ruling class. _Of course_
it is _part_ of the job of the ruling class's state apparatus to do
these types of things ! What are these people thinking ? This is about
as naive as one can get.
 Watergate _was_ a conspiracy, autopsied for the world to see.  If
these authors don't think the ruling class had Nixon in to do this type
of thing when necessary, it is they who completely misunderstand the
nature of the relationship between the ruling class and its repressive
state apparatus.. It is downright stupid to disparage baseed on some
self-attributed superior understanding of the nature  of the ruling
class , disparage the  speculation that 9/11 _might_ involve a plot
similar to those carried out by the Watergate agents.  It's really
ridiculous to claim that _The White House_ cannot contain some
"monolithic" group. The following sentence is downright stupid "defense"
of the character of the White House, etc.:

Of course , the White House is capable of this. It's like they
completely forgot Watergate, Oliver North . What is with these
"leftists" trying to coverup for the ":White House" ?  
Evidently it is Matt Taibbi, Spiegel & Grau who are like babes in the
woods when it comes to understanding the nature of a state apparatus
that serves a ruling class. It is exactly the job of the state to do
this type of dirty work for the ruling class so the ruling class itself
won't have to get its hands dirty.   This is one of the stupidest theses
I have ever seen, parading as if it has some superior understanding of
the "nature of government". Even if in the particular case of 9/11,
there was no covert operation by the US spooks, it is absolutely false
to propose that the US Executive Branch and its minions do not do things
like 9/11.    And of course, there are subsections of the state
apparatus who are not involved in this.  Who said anything like that ? 
It only takes special operations subgroups, like the Watergate
"plumbers" unit , not the whole Executive bureaucracy.  This article is
a pitifully weak argument in the service of covering up for these dirty
tricks subsections of the state.
