Re: [Marxism] Iran supports crackdown on Sadrists
Gee, Iran's foreign policy is contradictory?
Whose foreign policy isn't contradictory?
Foreign policy is a reflection of domestic
policy and class interest. Of course, what
exactly is in one class' interests at any
one time is not always easy to discern.
Some capitalists think war with Iran is good.
Some capitalists think war with Iran is not.
Some capitalists think blockading Cuba is good.
Some capitalists think blockading Cuba is bad.
"Iran's foreign policy is contradictory."
I agree. Iran's foreign policy is contradictory.
But the very subject line of this thread shows
it's main target is Iranian policy in Iraq and
not Iranian policy on Afghanistan. Furthermore,
it's also not at all clear that Iran today is
supporting US policy in Afghanistan, either.
War is the continuation of politics by other means.
Politics is the continuation of war by other means.

Iran, EU urge more aid to Afghanistan
Sun, 20 Apr 2008 09:13:41
Iran and the EU have called on countries to help Afghanistan find a
political solution to its woes and end the suffering of its people.
Iran's Ambassador to Kabul, Fada Hossein Maleki, and the EU
Ambassador to Afghanistan, Francesc Vendrell, exchanged views on the
strong resolve of the international community, the European Union and
regional countries to expand cooperation toward promotion of
stability, security and economic improvement in Afghanistan and help
it establish a democratic system.
Maleki and Vendrell also stressed the importance of cementing unity
and convergence among Afghanistan's neighboring states and other
countries to contribute to the country's efforts to make progress,
the Iranian Embassy in Afghanistan said in a statement.
The Iranian diplomat has recently held talks with the Afghan
President Hamed Karzai, the UN Special Representative in Afghanistan
Kai Eide, Italy's ambassador to Kabul and a number of Afghan
ministers on issues of concern.

LOUIS PROYECT writes:
Iran's foreign policy is contradictory. It is anti-imperialist to the
extent that it aids Shi'a allies in conflict with Israel. It is
pro-imperialist when it gave the green light for the US to invade
Afghanistan. Unless we understand its contradictory character, we
won't get very far. Maybe Walter was trying to say something like
this. If so, I would say that this is progress.
