Re: [Marxism] Counterpunch Swift-Boats McCain
I should say I disagree with Fred's characterization of Counterpunch as
"rightist pro-imperialist and a "mélange of left-liberalism and
anti-Bush rightism" and his conclusion that "it will probably not be very
effective against McCain."
I base this statement on this from the article:
"McCain is probably the most unstable man ever to have got this close to the
White House. He’s one election away from it. Republican senator Thad Cochrane
has openly said he trembles at the thought of an unstable McCain in the Oval
Office with his finger on the nuclear trigger."
What is the purpose of this? It isn't "rightist" and it isn't really meant to
be
effective against McCain in the sense of discouraging anyone who might be
thinking of voting for McCain, few of whom are reading CounterPunch anyway. No,
it's just the latest variant of the "we've got to vote for the lesser evil
Democrat to make sure this dangerous Republican doesn't get into the Oval
Office" line we've heard every four years for time immemorial. It is aimed at
the radicals and progressives like us who read CounterPunch, and who know that
Obama and Clinton are every bit as much wedded to imperialism as Bush and
McCain, trying to get us to overlook that fact and make sure we hold our nose
and vote for the Democratic nominee.
