[Marxism] Thomas Frank on the latest Obama flap

Shane Mage

Hegel's discussion in the "Phaenomenologie des Geistes" (the
reflection in philosophy of the Great French Revolution) is a riff on
Diderot's (Sophokles and Diderot are virtually the only authors cited
by name in that enormous book) wonderful novel "Jacques le Fataliste
et son MaÃtre." It has nothing of empirical sociology about it, but
is basically a meditation on the relationship between the mind (the
"master") and the body (the "slave"). To treat it as sociology is to
miss Hegel's profound materialist insight. Of course, all the
implicitly revolutionary sociological implications you want are
obvious in Diderot.

CB; Thanks , Shane. That's interesting, although if the mind is the master , it
sounds like an idealist insight. Your comment fit with Phenomenology of the
Mind being a psychology treatise.

Subject:object::master:slave

Mind:body::master:slave

(: means "is to"; :: means "as")
