[Marxism] Stern Gang attack
Re Joaquin's questions: Some have been answered already.
As for the others:
There were not hundreds in the Stern gang. There were 2 or 3 busloads, a
mixture of staff and bamboozled rank-and-file (meaning they can be won
over).
The Stern Gang (through their Midwest officials) wanted to go after both CNA
and United Healthcare Workers West. That's why the conference was a
flashpoint. CNA and UHW still have disagreements. But they are both opposing
Stern's pro-management strategy. And of course Stern will try to pit one
against the other while attacking both.
Regarding Joaquin's assumption that race was an issue: The UHW members in
attendance were almost all Black. And it was a joy talking to such an
inspired, determined, well-organized group. As for the conference as a
whole, there was a "Black workers track," tracks being the series of
workshops throughout the weekend (as there was for healthcare, immigrants,
etc.). Participation was varied and encouraging, with important
contributions from a variety of areas and struggles.
P.S. There was, once again, a very substantial Latin@ attendance at the
conference, who organized themselves to carry forward May 1st, anti-raid
activities, and other immigrant worker projects.
