Re: [Marxism] SEIU Disrupts 2008 Labor Notes

Obviously, we must all stand against undemocratic tactics such as these in
the movement. But if people are going to be able to take this attacks more
broadly, we will need somewhat more context.

I take it from what's said that at the center of the dispute is what is
described as the conflict between CNA/NNOC and SEIU. But what would make the
Labor Notes conference in Detroit a flashpoint in a California dispute? And
can people point to some articles that can fill us in on the background to
this dispute, whether SEIU has resorted to similar tactics elsewhere and so
forth?

And then simply more details about this clash. It says "hundreds" of SEIU
protestors. Where did they come from? What proportion was staff? Given the
figure "hundreds," I can't imagine they were all flown in, and thus involved
were the SEIU local structures, and probably rank-and-file members. From
which workplaces and/or locals? Is there some particular issue in Detroit
that was used to whip people up? I know Labor Notes conferences have been
mostly white in the past, and the Detroit labor movement is mostly not. Was
that an issue? Were there particular slogans or issues or fabrications that
were used to whip up or trick rank and filers into participating in the
attack?

Joaquin
