Re: [Marxism] Seeking a source on FDR's New Deal

Try "Franklin Delano Roosevelt: Champion of Freedom" by Conrad
Black (now serving a 6-year sentence in a Florida jail for
defrauding shareholders of his Hollinger Corp.).

from David Frum's enthusiastic review in the National Review:

"Black has been sometimes renowned, sometimes abused, on both
sides of the Atlantic for his robustly conservative politics.
About the very last thing that anybody would have expected from
him is a titanic, passionate, and eloquent defense of the author
of the New Deal. Yet here it is.

"Yet Black's Roosevelt is not the FDR of New Deal hagiography.
Black's FDR is not a man of the left, not even a liberal exactly.
Black endorses the verdict of the socialist Norman Thomas that
Roosevelt carried out the Socialist Party program "in a coffin."
Black's FDR is a leader determined to save democracy, the
free-enterprise system, and the US Constitution at a time when
democracy, markets, and constitutions were being overthrown all
over the planet. ..."

Subject: [Marxism] Seeking a source on FDR's New Deal

Can any point me to a readily available source that documents the
fact that
Roosevelt's New Deal, in terms of its main benefits to workers,
was an
unavoidable concession to popular unrest rather than altruism by
the
government? Plus a left critique of any other aspect of the New
Deal would
be handy. Something academic or semi-academic that can be
referenced as an
authority wouild be good.

thanks to anyone who can help.
