Re: [Marxism] Obama's former minister replies to distortions in NYTimes article

Fred writes: "The following was sent to the Change-Links list in Los
Angeles. No source was provided. Since it sounds authentic, I am being lazy
at 330 in the morning and not providing it, hoping that other comrades will
make up my failing. I think his view of Obama, though hardly conclusive, is
nonetheless interesting."

There is no question about the authenticity of the letter. It is included in
the Trinity United Church of Christ Bulleting from March 18, 2007; the
letter itself dated March 11, 2007. The bulletin can be downloaded directly
from the Trinity site at: www.tucc.org/upload/tuccbulletin_mar18.pdf.

As to the description of Obama, or how Obama may think of himself, or how he
might want to be, or how he might want to be perceived, you may want to
listen to his speech to something called the Renewal conference in 2006
discussing the role of religion and values in politics as well as the talk
he gave in the Brown chapel in Selma on the anniversary of Bloody Sunday and
the one he gave a couple of months ago at Ebenezer Baptist Church, where
Martin Luther King, Jr., was pastor. They're all on Obama's web site.

>From these, it is fairly clear that Obama places himself in the traditions
of the Black Christian Churches, and that he is deeply religious or
profoundly hypocritical in a completely conscious way. Since, AFAIK, he
doesn't pander on religion in his campaign, I think the truth is he is
deeply religious, and that the portrait Wright painted of him a year ago is
--taking into account Wright's own viewpoint, i.e., someone who has devoted
his life to his religion-- accurate.
